Your contraception options, explained simply
There's no single "best" method of contraception — the right choice depends on your health history, lifestyle and priorities. Dr Chegu discusses the full range of options with you, from the oral contraceptive pill and depot injection through to long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Kyleena), the copper IUD, and the Implanon contraceptive rod, with insertion and removal available at both the Mooroolbark and Seville clinics.
Your first appointment is a chance to talk through your health history, your priorities (contraception, period management, or both), and which option best fits your circumstances — with no pressure to decide on the spot.
Your options at a glance
- Oral contraceptive pill — taken daily; several formulations available depending on your health history.
- Depot injection — a contraceptive injection given every 12 weeks.
- Mirena — a hormonal IUD, used for contraception, heavy periods, and also for endometrial protection during perimenopause/menopause.
- Kyleena — a smaller hormonal IUD, lasting up to 5 years. Used for contraception, and tends to make periods lighter.
- Copper IUD — a non-hormonal option, lasting up to 5 years.
- Implanon — a small contraceptive rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm.
